Breaking down the Canucks’ new power play set up and breakout strategies

The Vancouver Canucks have had a ton of different looks on the power play this season. The team’s power play is currently ranked 14th in the league at 22.6%. This is the slightest decrease from last season’s percentage of 22.7%.

Throughout the season, the team have seen a bunch of different looks on the power play. Canucks Assistant Coach Yogi Švejkovský has given a variety of players opportunities to be on one of the power play units and has tried different setups and breakouts…

How can the Canucks get the best out of Elias Pettersson?

It certainly wasn’t the showing at the 4 Nations Face-Off that Vancouver Canucks were hoping for out of their number one centreman.

Finally, Elias Pettersson had the chance to play with his country’s best players. In three games, the Swede didn’t register a single point and just two shots on net. Not only did he struggle to produce, but he struggled to find ice time by the end of the tournament.

As we get back into the swing of the regular season, with the Canucks fighting to maintain a playoff spot, how can the team put Pettersson in the best possible scenario to succeed?…

Where has the Canucks’ depth scoring gone?

The Vancouver Canucks are currently ranked 23rd in the NHL in goals for, with an average of 2.79 goals per game. Compare this to last season, the Canucks ranked 6th in the league with 3.40 goals for per game.

Obviously, this season can’t be compared to last. We’re now well past the midway point of the 2024-25 season, and though the blame for the lack of scoring can’t be placed on the depth forwards, with this team’s stars also not playing up to their abilities…

The fans vote on four of the awards given out, so we will focus on those four…

Is it time to give Canucks D Elias Pettersson a shot in the NHL?

The Vancouver Canucks are currently missing their top two defencemen, Quinn Hughes and Filip Hronek. Since the beginning of the season, the Canucks defensive depth has been a concern with a lack of true top four defencemen and puck movers on the backend. Now, after losing their top two guys, there is a glaring hole in the team’s lineup.

Since losing Quinn Hughes to injury, the Canucks are 1-2-1. Those losses came against the Calgary Flames, Seattle Kraken, and Nashville Predators who are below the Canucks in the standings. The Kraken loss is one that especially stands out, with the Canucks having blown a three-goal lead with under five minutes to go in the game. Costly turnovers made by some of the team’s defencemen led to Kraken goals, and there was an apparent lack of Quinn Hughes in overtime…

Diving into and explaining Rick Tocchet’s Canucks systems

Since taking over as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, Rick Tocchet has instilled his system and values into this team, and has certainly left his mark. Since day one, Tocchet has preached defensive structure and has created a strong, hardworking culture within the team.

The way the Canucks play under Tocchet is quite simple. Tocchet’s systems are relatively basic, yet effective when executed with speed and effort from the players.

Let’s break them down from the defensive zone outwards…

Cold plunging is getting into a tub or bath with cold circulated water or ice water in order to cool the body off afterward or before the use of a sauna to get a euphoric jolt that stimulates the body…
